Change in theme

After receiving feedback today, I have had a slight change in theme. Instead of photos of boats, I am now going for contemporary landscapes of East Anglia. I will now look at some landscape photographers to see what they do too.

It was photos like this that changed me theme:

Finished path 1

It is one of my strongest landscape photos from the 3 shoots that I did. I will now use photos like this in my photo book.

Third photo shoot

For my third outing, I decided to go to Old Felixstowe as there is a small marina and fishing area there which I thought would be perfect for my photography. Annoyingly, the sun went in and the rain showers took over but I still managed to take some photos.

Here is a selection of photos that I took:

I found it difficult to get many good photos as you cannot get close to much at Old Felixstowe. This means that most things I wanted to take photos of were too far away to take an effective photo, therefore meaning I did not get much.

Here are some of my favourites:

I like this photo simply because the buoy looks like a giant Christmas tree bauble. You would also never realise how big they are until you are right up next to one! I was also surprised by the textures of the buoy as they look smooth from a distance.

This photo shows the small crossing (called Felixstowe Ferry) across the river mouth to Bawdsey. I think it is interesting that people still use this crossing, despite how small the boats are and how strong the current in the water is. I also like the colours and range of boats in the photo.

There are a lot of boat wrecks along the River Deben because the tide changes so much. Although they were too far away to take many photos of,  I still like this photo as it shows how these boat skeletons are left to rot forever.

Second Photo Shoot

Yesterday I went out to the beach again, but this time to Aldeburgh along the Suffolk coastline. Aldeburgh still has several small, individual fishing companies and families that go out every morning to catch local fish and sell in their huts along the shoreline. It is also an incredibly up-market town with many eateries, cafes and fashion shops. Aldeburgh’s beach is renowned for ‘The Scallop’ which is a sculpture on the beach in memory of Benjamin Britten who once lived there.

Sadly the clouds rolled in whilst we were there so my photos are not quite as blue as the ones from the day before. I did, however, manage to get closer to some of the boats on the coastline which was good.

Here are some of my favourite photos from the shoot:

I am thinking that perhaps I could document each place in my book under a subheading and then show photos of the boats after this.

First Photo Shoot

To get a feel of what theme I wanted to go with, I decided to just go straight out to the beach and take some photos. From there I can then identify some similarities with my photos and go down a specific route.

Yesterday I went to Burnham On Staithe, a small village near Wells Next The Sea on the North Norfolk Coastline. This already means that I need to expand the location area of my work to both Norfolk and Suffolk beaches. The weather was really bright and sunny which is exactly what I was after and it was not too busy which is good too.

Here are a few of the photos I took:

I have realised that a common theme with my photography from yesterday is boats. I have taken quite a lot of photos that in some way or another include a part of or thing related to boats. This could definitely be a theme for my work, depending on where I next go and whether there are any boats there or not.

Here are a few of my favourite photos from the shoot:

Sadly I could not get very close to many of the boats as they were in the mud/water, so I look to get closer to some at where ever I go next.

Ism

Ism: noun, a distinctive practice, system, or philosophy, typically a political ideology or an artistic movement.

While we are at home for Easter, I thought it would be nice to make my book project on the area where I live (Suffolk). Suffolk is an incredibly historic county, famous for its witchcraft trials, tudor properties, cider and stunning pebbled beaches. As I take my dog for a walk at the beach a lot, especially Aldeburgh and Southwold, I thought it might be nice to make a photo book of these places. I do not want to go down a typical tourist photography route and may look at taking different photos of Suffolk Beaches. My project could then be titled ‘Suffolk-ism’ or ‘Beach-ism.’ I may then look to go down a more specific route such as things washed up on the beach like boats and debris, but this depends on what I find.

Here are some photos of the beaches in Suffolk that I have previously taken:
