Crime watchers

Newcastle University have been using photos of eyes to try and prevent bike theft. By placing images of eyes above the university’s bike racks, bike theft has been reduced by 62% as people feel as though they are being watched. British Transport Police are now looking at adopting a similar method in train stations to try and lower crime rates.

This has led me to think that I could put photos of eyes near our university bike racks and cash machines to see if it makes people feel uncomfortable too.

Big Brother is Watching You

Following on with my idea of holding an exhibition that involves photos of eyes and faces, I have decided to do a little research into big brother and how the world is watching you.

In the UK there is approximately 1 CCTV camera for every 32 people, with there being just under 2 million recorded. The majority of these are in fact inside and owned privately, however city streets are also owned by them.

The use of CCTV is going so far now that they are even being used in school toilets and changing rooms to prevent theft and bullying.

But is not all bad news, CCTV helps the British Transport Police monitor criminal’s cars, speed limits and more. They also help to catch wanted people, frequently used on Crimewatch.

I think the idea of using photography as a way of making people feel like they are being watched is a very interesting one. In a way, using photos of eyes would replace cameras as that in itself could make people feel guilty or like they are being watched.

I had the idea of putting them in several places like in toilets, corridors, alleyways and just in corners and gaging how people react to them. This would also be quite a cheap and easy way of holding an exhibition as it would just involve printing some pictures off. You could also use various different facial expressions to see how the photos affect people differently.

Exhibitions

For our next brief, I am a little unsure with as for what to do. We have been shown a video from a previous year of a whole photography class putting on an exhibition under the Brayford Bridge…but I did not particularly like this and thought it was just in the way of passing pedestrians.

I am also unsure for as to what work I am supposed to be showing and hope to get in a group soon so that we can sort something out.

Until I have decided what to do, I have decided to research different guerilla exhibitions to see what other people have done.

I have found this Tumblr blog that includes various different photos of other people’s guerilla exhibitions:

The exhibitions on this site are just in fairly random (and run-down) looking places. The people have literally just printed out photos and stuck them in windows and on walls. This is an easy way of getting people to look at your work as they walk past and is cheap too. However I do not think it always looks very visually appealing.

The photos of people’s faces seem to be the most eye catching as it appears as though there is someone looking at you. I quite like the idea of placing photos of people’s faces or eyes somewhere and seeing what people’s reactions are to it – could represent a big brother style photo looking at you.
